Painted Mushroom Planter Decoration

How absolutely adorable is this?! Seriously, I love adding cute decorations to my garden and fairy houses are a huge thing these days. I decided to combine the fairy house idea with a mushroom and came up with a painted toadstool to go in the garden.

For this mushroom planter garden decoration, I used two different sizes of planters and bowls. I love that you can customize them to fit into your garden and even match your home with different paint colors!

What Paint Should I Use for This Mushroom Planter?

For this, I actually found white planters and red bowls, so all I had to do was find some permanent markers to draw on them and create the houses. I like using colored permanent markers for projects when I can because they are less messy.

If you plan to put these outsides, I recommend a good oil-based craft paint so they don’t wash off easily. You could also use spray paint, paint pens, or leftover paint for your house!

Can I Cut the Door Out of This Planter?

One of my kids asked if I could make the door fully functional in this mushroom planter fairy house. Of course! All you need is a good pair of scissors or a craft knife.

Just score around the edges of the door your drew leaving the one side attached so the rest can swing open or closed.

This turns it into a fun playhouse for your kids to have in their bedroom, or for imagination play in the garden!

My daughter loves bringing her fairy dolls out to the garden and creating dioramas of them around and inside the mushroom house.

Such a great way to encourage her to use her imagination, and to get her outside playing in fresh air!

How to Make a Painted Mushroom Planter for the Garden

I begin this project by gathering the supplies I need together. I chose a white planter and red bowl, which should be readily available to you.

If you need to paint them to match the colors, you will need to do that outside and allow them to dry before continuing with the rest of the directions.

When picking the bowl for the top, you will want to make sure it is deep and wide enough to fit down over the planter easily. Remember, you will be putting the planter open side down for this project.

The first step is to draw a door on the bottom of the planter. You will use black permanent marker to outline the door, then fill it in with brown or gray marker. I drew a few stripes of black and a dot for the “doorknob”.

Once you have your door drawn on, you can use hot glue to secure the bowl on top of the planter as shown. The planter will be open side down, and the bowl will go on top open side down so it is larger than the planter and looks more like a real mushroom.

The final step for this fairy house mushroom planter is to draw on the circles. You can use alternate colors of paint and draw circles on the bowl for the mushroom. I used black to outline and green on the inside to look like moss.
