If you’ve seen flower pot people before, you know just how adorable they can be. This little polka dot upcycled flower pot girl is one of my favorite new additions to the garden. It’s surprisingly easy to make and makes a lovely decoration for inside or outside. Make several to decorate your patio, deck, or garden. Of course, they are also a wonderful gift!

Seriously, look how absolutely adorable this turned out! I am so in love with the look that flower pot people give in my garden. This year, I want to work on adding a whole family to my front porch, and this is the beginning. I used this great pink paint and added white polka dots, but you can paint yours any color. I thought she would look great against my otherwise plain deck. I loved the pop of color.

Since flower pots are already designed to go in the garden outside, I know they will stand up under different weather and everyday wear and tear. You can make your flower pot have tons of personality with different looks and additions, or just have a basic person with a simple smile. Use your imagination and have fun making one or more for your garden.

What Paint is Best for Clay Pots?

When you are working on this project, you’ll want a great paint that is designed for terra cotta. In the past, I’ve found that acrylic works great on these types of projects.

For a faster application, spray paint is also a good choice on clay pots. Just remember, that for this project, you’ll want just a bit more precision in the polka dots and around the edges. So, if using spray paint, you’ll add those details after the rest is in place.

If you plan to leave these outside all the time, you may want to apply a protective layer or sealant. There are many sealants in the paint section of your hardware store, but you can also just grab good old fashioned Mod Podge and use it on the flower pot instead. A protective layer helps your girl look great for years instead of just a few days.

How do I Secure The Arms So They Won’t Fall Off?

You want to use a heavy-duty glue when you are securing the arms. This is so the arms do not fall off when the glue dries. You’ll thread the rope through the smaller flower pots, but secure it to the larger with glue.

My trusty hot glue gun and hot glue are always handy for projects like this one. It is affordable, already on hand, and always easy to access more glue for it.

If you prefer, you can pick up a heavy-duty craft glue like E6000 which typically will secure something like this for the longterm. Another option I keep on hand is Gorilla Glue. It is a great brand that really stands the test of time on craft projects.

Can I Plant Real Flowers In This?

Yes! That is part of the beauty of this design. You can still add soil to the top flower pot and fill it with flowers, or even vegetables. I love the idea of creating a few of these in different colors for each herb I want to grow.

You could paint one purple for lavender, green for mint, red for basil, blue for thyme, and so on! Get creative and make a ton of these little flower pot people in all styles and use them instead of just a basic flower pot to grow a little herb garden on your porch!

Supplies Needed

How to Make a Flower Pot Girl

To begin, you will paint your flower pots the color you desire. I started with this nice bright pink.

Paint the two small flower pots completely red on the outside, then one of the larger flower pots completely red, and one only paint the rim of the flower pot.

Set aside the flower pots to dry.

Now, you will use the pencil eraser or a round hard-bristled paintbrush and dip into the white paint to add polka dots on the painted areas of the pots.

Once all the pots are painted, set them aside to dry the polka dots.

When the paint is dry, you will use a paint pen to draw on the face of your flower pot that wasn’t fully painted.

Now, glue the ribbon just along the edge of the rim of that flower pot.

Next, you will glue the two larger flower pots together so that the fully painted one is upside down on the bottom, and the one with the face is open on top.

Now, string the rope through the hole in the bottom of one of the small flower pots, tying it in a knot to stay secure on the inside of the pot. String the other end of that rope through the inside of the other pot, and secure with a knot and glue.

Next, you will attach the arms to the back of the flower pot girl by gluing the rope along the seam of the two pots.

Add a length of beads around the middle of the flower pot where they connect for a necklace.

Fill the top with real or artificial flowers.

Display in your home on a windowsill or outside in your garden.

Crafter’s Tip

If you want to skip the painting part of this project, you can just add small details and embellishments to the flower pots. I have used these cute face stickers in the past. You can also buy various flower pots in different colors already so all you have to do is assemble your person.
