Once again, I am back with flowers as the showpiece for a craft. If you haven’t been here before, you’ll find out very quickly that I am low-key obsessed with flowers. I love fresh cut from my garden, but with limited months of the year producing fresh flowers, I have to find alternatives.

Making paper, yarn, or fabric flowers has become one of my crafting hobbies. I love the results of this and other great projects.

If you are looking for an easy way to use leftover fabric pieces or want to create something that will make a lovely decoration, these are a perfect choice. These flowers look absolutely wonderful when displayed around the house, used on cards or packages or made into a centerpiece.

Once you see how easy it is to make them, you will want to make them for everyone.

What Can I Use for the Center of the Flowers?

There are so many options that can be used for the center of the flowers. You can use a simple piece of fabric cut into a circle or a cute button. Little jewels, real or costume, will work great as the center of the flower.

Another really cute idea is to use a simple or decorative bead. If you have a broken beaded necklace or bracelet these flowers are a great way to reuse the beads.

Get creative when making these flowers. Make the center match the color of fabric by coordinating it exactly, or using an opposite color that complements it well. There are tons of ways to turn this into something that really pops and makes it look even more beautiful when displayed.

You can even use fabric paint or a paint pen to add the center to your flowers if you prefer. There is no right or wrong way of making this craftwork.

Is Any Fabric Best for Making These?

While any fabric can be used, I find it works best with a lighter weight fabric. Some that I have found work great are flannel, cotton, and even silk. However, you could also use satin, chiffon, or tulle and have fun results.

I have made similar flowers using denim, burlap, and canvas, but they are a bit more difficult to manage and tend to not look as natural. You can use any you prefer if wanted. There is no perfect way to make these flowers.

What Ways Can I Display These Flowers?

Obviously, these work great when placed in a vase alongside other artificial greenery. I love this method best as it really makes the color pop in a room. That said, it’s not the only way you can show these off. Check out some of my other ideas below.

Glue the individual flowers onto a mat and place inside a shadowbox.
Attach the flower to a hair clip for a large floral hair bow for little girls.
Use as a corsage or boutonniere for weddings or high school prom.
Glue to a foam or vine wreath form and create a springtime flower wreath for your door.
Attach to the top of a gift in place of the traditional bow.

How to Make a Fabric Flower Bouquet

Start by cutting a length of fabric. How much you cut depends upon how large you want your flower. I used about 3 feet of fabric per flower for this project.

Now, fold that fabric over itself several times.

Fold it until you have a square. Doing this helps make your cuts even along the length of the fabric used.

Now, on one of the open edges of the square, you will start cutting in a scalloped or rounded fashion.

Once unfolded, you’ll see this pattern has repeated over the length of the fabric.

Now, you will begin sewing the fabric into the flower shape. You will use a long stitch to pull this fabric together and gather so that it is furled on the sides.

Continue this process until you have threaded through the entire length of fabric, gathering it together into a circle and sewing the ends together to pull it tight in the center as shown.

On the top of the fabric flower, you can glue or sew on a button, bead, or another embellishment to create a center to the flower.

Trim off excess thread on the bottom of the flower.

Now, you will attach the floral wire or stem to the bottom of the flower with glue or more thread.

Next, add a few artificial leaves to the bottom as shown.

Once you are satisfied with the look, you can put your flowers into a face or box to display!

I’ve made hundreds, okay, perhaps thousands, of different flowers in the past. Some of my favorites include these decorative fabric flowers, or these super easy to make flowers from fabric.

Crafter’s Tip:

If you don’t have scrap fabric pieces on hand, feel free to pick up some already cut into yards. I love the fabric bundles on Etsy. You can also cut apart an old t-shirt or even sheets you have on hand already to create this flower!
