DIY Old Book Floating Witch with Broom Halloween Decor

This adorable floating paper witch with a broom is such an elegant decoration. You would never believe it all started with an old worn-out book that would have been in the trash or recycling. Add your own unique additions to give the witch personality. You can leave this on the little base or hang it from the ceiling. No matter what you choose, it’s a perfect addition to any Halloween decoration plan.

Don’t be frightened of this Halloween witch! She is as sweet as can be and incredibly easy to make. Using old book pages, a little paint, and a few other crafting materials, this witch is the perfect Halloween decoration. I love that this has both a rustic and elegant look all at the same time.

Halloween is so fun but often the witch decorations end up being spooky. Instead of fear, this witch makes you smile and adds a ton of beauty to a room. Nothing is better than seeing kids smiling faces when they see this cute little decoration on a mantle. If you are looking for a craft to make with the kids, this is a great one!

What Else Can I Use to Stand My Witch Up?

I used a little slice of wood to make my witch stand up straight. You could use any piece of wood to build a little platform for your witch. Of course, you can also add a bit of fishing line, twine, or rope to the back of the witch and hang it from the ceiling.

Stick a dowel or skewer down the center of the witch and glue it to a small piece of wood or cardboard to create a different look that will also hold your witch steady. No matter what you choose, the real details happen in the decorations.

What Can I Use for Witch Hair?

I made the hair with pipe cleaners, but you could use anything you wanted to add hair to your witch. If you do not have pipe cleaners or just another simple idea for the witch hair, you can use paper, yarn or string. You can also use fake hair that is often used for dolls or from a wig. The possibilities are endless. You can mix and match the ideas to create something new each time you make this witch.

What Ways Can I Decorate My Witch?

For this one, I used a bit of beaded ribbon around the hat. You could use beads, ribbon, or any little plastic embellishment if you wanted. I also used orange spray paint to color my book pages, but you could use black, green, brown, or purple. All are common colors associated with witches. Of course, there are no rules to what color a witch’s body, face, hat, or dress is made. You can turn yours into whatever you personally like to add color to a room.

The witches hat is made from felt, but you could buy your own already made hat. I’ve even made hats from scrap fabric that turned out wonderful. Halloween patterned fabric always looks great. The finishing touches for this witch may also include things like button eyes, a little fabric or pipe cleaner mouth, or just a little added glitter sparkle around the edges.

Supplies Needed

How to Make a Paper Witch from Old Books

Remove the outer cover of an old book but leave the glue holding the pages together intact.

Begin folding the first page downward at an angle into a triangle.

Fold the bottom half upward at an angle so that the page is now a complete triangle shape.

Now, fold it one more time inward at an angle so it is a long thin angle that is a very tall and angled triangle.

Continue this process with all of the pages until all are folded identically.

Now, stand it up and glue the two outer pieces together to form the body of the witch.

Now add glue to the bottom end of the book and attach it to a small wooden slice.

Spray the entire book witch body orange and set it aside to dry.

While the witch is drying, cut a long piece of felt that is 1″ wide.

Now, cut a triangle from the felt and roll it into a cone shape to form the witches’ hat.

Next, use a pencil to wrap 2-4 pipe cleaners into spirals to form hair.

Glue the hairpieces onto the ball on either side and the back if desired.

Attach the hat to the top of the ball covering the edges of the hairpieces.

Glue that long strip of felt around the bottom edge of the hat to create a brim.

Wrap the twine around your fingers 10-15 times, then cut and wrap a pipe cleaner around one end of the loop of twine. Leave one end of the pipe cleaner long and straight.

Now, cut through the bottom loops of the twine to create a broom then set this aside.

Add a strip of beaded ribbon just around the base of the witch’s hat right above the brim.

Glue the head to the top of the witch’s body.

Wrap an orange pipe cleaner around the base of the head leaving the ends dangling down as arms.

Add the broom to the arms by wrapping the ends of the arm around the broom handle.

Glue additional beaded ribbon around the neck.

Now you can display your witch on a mantle or table as desired.
