This baby diaper basket is the perfect baby shower gift or gift for a new mom. The diaper basket is made using diapers that all babies need and is then filled with baby essentials or small cuddly toys. I love how easy this is to whip up and that you can customize it for any baby. Make this a perfect gift for both mother and baby or use it as a centerpiece at an upcoming baby shower!

Baby Diaper Basket
I love making unique baby shower gifts that work as both a lovely gift idea and a practical gift. Similar to a traditional diaper cake that is always popular at baby showers, this basket is just a little bit different. The base is made of diapers so perfect for any new mom. You can add your own preferred colors or even a theme from a cartoon or animal that you prefer. There is nothing like making a gift that is homemade, useful, and pretty as a decoration! I love this one!
Some parents decide to leave the basket together for a time as part of the nursery decorations and some parents will disassemble it in order to use the diapers and items in the center. I like to plan that the person will disassemble it and be able to use the diapers. This is one of the reasons I make sure that I do not glue anything permanently in place. Make your own diaper basket to give any new parent just what they need when that baby arrives.
Can I Use a Pool Noodle Instead of Foam for the Handle?
If you do not have the foam wreath form to use as the handle of the basket you can also use a pool noodle. Since the pool noodle will be covered in colorful ribbon or crate paper, it does not matter the color of the pool noodle. Of course, you can also find a pool noodle that matches the colors of your themes!
I love that a pool noodle is available at the Dollar Tree. That means this diaper basket is even less expensive to create. For me, that also means I can add extra special gifts to the center or invest in the nicer brand of diapers. Every cent that I save on decorations I can add back into the basket in gifts or diapers. Of course, that is better for the new mom and baby to be.
What Should I Line the Basket With?
For this basket, I used a round hat box I had on hand. The inside of the box was already white, so I didn’t have to add anything. If you use a different box, you may want to line the inside to cover the box, or even to add height to the basket to hold your gifts.
I have used baby blankets, hooded towels, or even baby onesies to line a basket. You can also use scrap fabric that matches the colors of the decorations. Of course, my favorite option is using recycled shredded paper. It adds bulk to the basket and is a great way to upcycle newspaper or scrap paper I already had on hand.
An extra special way to line the basket is to use wrapping paper. Just cut and tape or glue in place to cover the inside of the box and add a new look to the basket. I’ve done this on both the inside and outside of baskets for many gifts I have made.

How to Make a Baby Diaper Basket
Start from the folded end of a diaper and roll into a vertical tube securing it with rubber bands.
Continue this for an additional 15-20 diapers depending upon how large your basket is.
Use a craft knife to cut out the lower portion of a foam wreath form so that it resembles a basket handle.
Cut pink tissue paper into a few long strips.
Then wrap and glue or tape to the wreath form and secure on both ends.
Wrap pink polka dot ribbon around the wreath form gluing to secure every few inches.
Glue the wreath form to the top of the basket.
Wrap the outside of the round box with removable double sided tape on top and bottom so there are two strips to secure diapers.
Place diapers vertically all around the basket until it is covered.
Cut a strip of the pink tissue paper and wrap around the outside of the basket in the center so that the diapers are showing on both top and bottom.
Wrap the gold and white polka dot ribbon around the center of the pink tissue paper and secure with glue or a stapler.
Using the pink polka dot ribbon, create a ruffle around the top edge of the basket just above the diapers.
Line the inside of the basket with extra diapers if desired.
Add a few stuffed animals, baby products, or baby toys inside the basket.
Now you can setup as a decoration for a baby shower or wrap and gift to an expectant mom.

Crafting Tip
If you can’t find a round box, you can easily find them on Etsy. I love using vintage hat boxes for upcycled crafts, and they would be ideal for this project. You could also, of course, just use a square or rectangular box for this basket if needed.
