Stunning Upcycled Book Page Scroll Wreath

Upcycling is one of my favorite things to do when crafting. Taking something old and turning it into a beautiful new creation is a wonderful feeling. With so many ways to use this wreath, you can make many of them and make each one look unique. That’s what brings joy in crafting!

These are surprisingly easy to make, and definitely one that kids can help create. When it comes to crafting, I am always a fan of anything that my kids can do with me. Family crafting is so much fun!

Can I Paint My Scrolls?

While I like to leave the book page scrolls looking like vintage book pages, you can certainly paint them if you want them a certain color. If you want to paint the scrolls, you can paint them normally or you can thin the paint using water. When you thin the paint, it turns into a stain. This lets you dye the pages without covering the words on the paper.

I find it is a bit easier to paint them before you roll them, but this does add significant time to your crafting experience. Watercolors and stains seem to work best when trying to paint the paper.

Other options are to paint just the edges of the scrolls before gluing to the wreath. Of course, my husband would tell you to just take a can of spray paint and add a bit of color to the wreath after it is assembled. While not my normal method, it definitely has some benefits that can’t be denied.

No matter what you do, it’s easy to add personality to your wreath.

Do I Have to Use Book Pages for This Wreath?

Absolutely not! If you don’t want to use a book, it’s not necessary for this. Any paper works for making the paper scrolls. In fact, I have made similar projects with all kinds of scrapbook paper. The type of paper you use doesn’t matter at all. It’s all about rolling them into the scroll shapes.

Note: If you don’t like the idea of taking apart a book, you can print quotes on paper instead. I know many people who are hesitant to take apart books even if they are almost destroyed already. That’s fine – you don’t have to do that! Just print out pages or quotes instead!

Can I Add Other Embellishments to This Wreath?

Even though this wreath is neutral, you can definitely add things to make it a seasonal themed wreath. A few little changes can turn it from basic and neutral to incredibly unique holiday decoration.

Sometimes we have to think a bit outside the box to come up with creative ways to change a wreath, but this paper scroll wreath is ideal for making into something unique. Get creative! Below are a few ideas I love!

• Add butterflies, hummingbirds, dragonflies, or other small birds to the wreath.
• Glue small paper or artificial flowers to the bow.
• Add common holiday accents like hearts, pumpkins, wreaths, snowman, flags, and similar.
• Put miniature “caps” on around the scrolls to celebrate a graduation from school.
• Glue on balloons in a variety of colors for birthdays.
• Use for baby showers with blue or pink rattles, pacifiers, and similar.
• Add colored ribbon for different holidays.

  • Pink and red for Valentine’s Day
  • Green or rainbow for St. Patrick’s Day
  • Pastel colors for Easter
  • Bright colors for spring and summer
  • Red, white, and blue for 4th of July
  • Black and orange for Halloween
  • Gold, orange, yellow, brown, and maroon for fall and Thanksgiving
  • Green, red, silver, and white for Christmas.

Can I Use a Traditional Wreath Form?

I like using scrap cardboard from old boxes as wreath forms. They are already on hand and cost nothing. Plus, they are easy to cut to fit any size you want your wreath to be on your door.

Of course, if you prefer to use a more traditional wreath form, you certainly can. I recommend something thin like a wire wreath form or a grapevine form. Styrofoam just wouldn’t look as nice with this process and would stick out too much.

Supplies Needed

How to Make an Old Book Page Paper Scroll Wreath

Draw a large circle onto a piece of cardboard.Now, draw another circle inside that one, about 2″ smaller.

Cut the larger circle out with a craft knife.

Now, cut the middle circle out so you have a ring shape. Set this aside for later.

Tear or cut out old book pages and then take each page, and roll it into a cylinder shape.

Once the scroll is rolled, you will add a dab of glue on the seam to hold it in place then repeat this process 30-40 times. You may need more or less depending upon how large you make the scroll.

Next, you will cut a small length of twine for each scroll. A 3″ piece is about right for this.

Tie a piece of twine around each scroll and set them aside.

Lay your cardboard wreath form on the table, and glue a scroll at the top, bottom, and two sides so that the center of the scroll is glued to the cardboard and the sides poke out on each side.

Now, go around the wreath gluing more scrolls in between these until the entire wreath is full.

Next, you will repeat this process, gluing the second layer of scrolls on top of the first, but place them just a bit off-center from the others so they overlap a little.

Once all of the scrolls are in place, you will use some burlap lace and cut a length to tie a bow.

Trim the ends of the bow, and glue in place on the center top of the wreath.

You can now add a bit of embellishment like this little mini bottle with a scroll inside. Tie or glue this in place.
