Pumpkin Planter Craft
Turn an ugly old terra cotta planter into this adorable little pumpkin in no time! I love upcycling items, and whether you buy a planter brand new or use one you already have on hand, this is a great idea for low-budget decorating.
I made a goofy face on my pumpkin planter, but you can make it into a scary face, happy face, or more like a jack-o-lantern. Have fun creating the personality of the pumpkin with markers or paint!
My DIY scarecrow clay pot lantern is another fun way to use a planter for something other than planting flowers.
Can I Use a Plastic Planter Instead?
Of course, if you have a plastic or even ceramic planter, you can definitely use it instead. Depending on what kind of planter you have for this project, you may want to use a different type of paint to make sure your pot is orange. A decent craft paint will work on most surfaces, but for this, spray paint might be a better choice.
What’s the Best Paint for Terra Cotta Pots?
I prefer using good craft paint or even a simple matte paint from the hardware store. If you have a plastic planter, you may prefer to use something like a spray paint that is designed to stick to a plastic surface.
Whatever paint you choose, a matte finish is preferred. This will also make drawing the face onto your pumpkin easier to manage.
Tip: Ask at your hardware store for small pint containers of paint. Sometimes odd colors will be discarded, and you can pick them up for a great price.

How to Make a Silly Faced Pumpkin Planter
Begin by gathering all of your supplies and covering your workstation with a newspaper or drop cloth to protect your table from paint drips.
You will begin by painting the pot orange on all sides. Painting the outside is all that is necessary, but make sure you pain the bottom, which will become the top.
Once you are done painting, set aside the pot to dry.
When the pot has dried completely, you can start drawing on the face. I begin with a black paint pen to outline the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Fill in the face as needed, and have fun creating a unique look.
Your final step is to glue the decorative hay on the top of your pumpkin planter.
