If you’ve been inside any home decor shop or craft shop in the last few years, you’ve probably seen one of these paper flower wall art pieces. Using an old book, I recreated my own version making a slightly rustic but still classy decoration that is ideal for any wall in your home. This is especially fun since it uses one of my favorite craft supplies, the old books that would otherwise be thrown out. I am sure you will love this!

Book Page Paper Flower Wall Art

Art pieces framed by ornate frames like these are some of my favorite pieces in galleries and in stores. There is just something about taking a simple but beautiful decoration and adding that extra pop of color or style with a frame. I have seen frames around pictures, canvas, artwork, or simple flowers. This piece was one that came together much more beautifully than expected, and I am very pleased with the result.

You can hang this directly on the wall and then simply place the frame around the flower. Or, you can use the method I did and attach the flower to the frame. I find this is best since it only adds one hole to the wall instead of 2-3. If you are renting, that’s especially important to consider.

Is This a Wreath or Wall Art?

It is both! Designed to go on a wall, it is, to me, more wall decor or wall art than a wreath. However, the very base of this craft is a wreath form, and you can use it as a wreath or call it a wreath if you prefer. To me, a wreath doesn’t have to be round. It can be anything you want it to be!

This paper flower is made out of a fanned paper attached to a wreath frame. That is then attached to a picture frame. It works for whatever you want to use it for and is whatever you call it.

Where Can I Find Inexpensive Ornate Frames?

One of the first considerations you have to make for this project is what frame you want to use. I find the large ornate frames like this one to be perfect for this type of decor, but they can be expensive when purchased brand new.

So, how do you manage to find a frame like this without spending a ton of money?

  1. Look at the frames and old pictures you may already have in your home. If you aren’t fond of the image it holds, remove it and use the frame for this project.
  2. Check out the clearance section at any local department store that sells home decor. Many framed items may have holes or rips but the frame is in good condition and a cheap price.
  3. Shop at thrift shops or second-hand shops where many old pictures are under $5 each and the frame can be used for this project.
  4. Create your own using pieces of crown molding you have cut and attached in a square or rectangle then spray paint gold.

Do I Have to Hang This On a Frame?

No, you do not have to hang the old book flower on the frame. It can be used as a wreath on the door or hung directly onto a wall. I like this as it adds an element of extra beauty and makes it a bit easier to secure to the wall. Do what works best for your home and specific needs.

Can I Use Any Paper for This?

You can definitely use any type of paper you prefer to make this paper flower that goes inside the frame. I like the easy folding method since it means you can use construction paper, scrapbook paper, or craft paper if desired. You could even use plain old newspapers for this project if you wanted. This does work best when the paper can be a bit stiff to hold the shape of the fan but it doesn’t have to be a special paper for that to work.

What Can I Use to Secure the Paper Other Than Push Pins?

The core of this “flower” is assembled with push pins holding the paper in place. Since you are using so many individual paper fans for this, you may find that to be a bit excessive with the pins.

I always have a ton of push pins in my sewing desk, and yes, I have bought them by the hundreds, so for me, this is no big deal. If you don’t have them on hand, you can do other things to secure the paper.

Options that might work include hot glue, craft glue, and staples. I find the fastest and easiest method would likely be to staple the paper in place.

If not using the push pins, I recommend experimenting with the other options on a small batch to see how they look before committing to the whole wreath.

How to Make a Book Page Paper Flower Wall Art

Tear 50-60 pages from an old book.

\"Woman

Fold the page in half horizontally, then in half again, and in half a third time. The result should be paper folded into a 1-1 1/2″ wide strip.

Unfold the page, then fold accordion style going back and forth at each crease.

\"Woman

Continue this process until all pages are folded into fan shapes.

On a small styrofoam wreath form, starting on the inside top edge, start pinning the fanned paper in place so that one end is open and fanned out.

\"Woman

Continue pinning in place until you have created a row all around the form.

\"Woman

Now, move down slightly lower toward the inside of the form, and pin the second layer of paper fans over the top layer.

Repeat this a third time filling in any gaps so that the center is full and fluffy like a flower as shown.

\"Woman

Turn your frame over so the back is facing up, and attach the rope to one side of the frame with hot glue.

\"Adding

Turn the rope over and create a second row of rope and connect on the other side of the frame. You want to end up with two pieces of rope parallel and about 1/2″ apart glued onto the frame.

\"Adding

Now, turn the frame over so the front of the frame is facing up.

Add hot glue to the pieces of rope.

\"Adding

Then place the wreath form onto the rope and hold to secure.

\"Attaching

Now you can add a picture hanger or additional rope onto the back of the frame to hang it on the wall.

If you have leftover book pages after making this large paper flower to hang on the wall, you can check out some of our other favorite options. Make this book page star wall art or a book page hedgehog. You can turn old book pages into paper flower bouquets, or a book page paper vase. I’ve made them into a rustic fringed old book page wreath and even cute little book page butterflies. The possibilities are truly endless!

Crafter’s Tip

Another great option to find old frames or distressed frames to use for this project is to look on Etsy. There are many listings for ornate picture frames that are affordable or can even be customized for your color and style.
