Bats are a natural addition to your Halloween decor. Making this cute little upcycled spoon bat is the perfect easy kids Halloween craft that doubles as decoration. A bit of glue, paper, spoons, and paint and you have a fun happier version of a classic Halloween spooky animal! Upcycled Spoon Bat

I grew up making all kinds of fun things out of plastic spoons. They were used at church vacation Bible school craft time, in class at school for a variety of puppets, and of course, at home, making crafts for various holidays. This is one of those ways you can use something you already have on hand and spend little to no money to create a cute craft to add to your home for Halloween.

Plastic spoons are inexpensive and available everywhere. Gluing a bit of paper to them and adding a fun little smile with eyes turns a spoon for your favorite soup into a darling little addition to your Halloween crafting and decor.

What Kind of Spoons Should I Use?

For my version of this project, I used an ordinary plastic spoon from the disposable utensils section at my local dollar store. In fact, I keep a box of disposable utensils on hand at all times for things like this, and those nights I don’t feel like washing dishes.

If you don’t want to create waste from plastic spoons, look for those that are made using recycled materials or even wooden disposable spoons. There are tons of Eco-friendly options out there now to make something like this with zero guilt.

Of course, you can also make this project using larger plastic or wooden serving spoons if you want to keep your bat around to decorate with for years to come. Just use some extra glue and make sure you store them carefully.

Can I Just Buy Colorful Spoons Instead?

You sure can! I like to use what I already have on hand, so I just ended up painting white spoons in pink and green. If you want to splurge, check out Dollar Tree online for a variety of colored spoons.

These are also often available in any party store or party section at a local department store. You can usually find orange, pink, green, black, and blue spoons year-round. That makes creating these a bit earlier than Halloween easy to manage.

How Do You Store These Between Holidays

One struggle I had the first time I made these was that by the time I pulled them out the next year, the wings had crumpled, the spoon was cracked, and it was basically into the trash bin immediately. So, if you are planning to keep these around for a few years to use over and over again, you’ll want to take note of how you store them.

• Place them together in a small bin that holds only these bats. I like the shoebox-sized plastic bins for items like this. That bin can then go inside a larger tote if desired.
• Hang them by their strings on a hook in your storage closet, and cover with a plastic bag to keep off the dust until time to bring them out next year.
• Place them on the very top of a Halloween decoration tote and cover with a piece of fabric to prevent being cracked or broken with something on top, but still secure from jostling around.

How Can I Hang These?

If you want to hang these from the ceiling, you can easily do so with a bit of fishing line attached to the top or bottom of the spoon. I have used a hot needle to poke a hole through the plastic on a spoon for this purpose.

You can also hot glue or tape a piece of twine, ribbon, or the fishing line, onto the back of the spoon. This isn’t always as secure but should work well to hold the bat up for the holiday season.

Another option for hanging them on the wall, mantle, or on a door is to pick up some Command strips or Command hooks to secure them with a bit of ribbon as a loop or similar.

How to Make an Upcycled Spoon Bat

Paint the spoons on all sides with craft paint then set aside to dry.

While the spoons are drying, trace a batwing shape onto black craft paper and cut it out.

Also, cut out two small triangles from the black paper to use as ears.

Cut out two small white triangles for teeth.

Once the spoon has dried, add craft glue to the back and secure the handle of the spoon onto the middle of the paper wings. Make sure that the bottom of the spoon that is rounded outward is facing the front.

Add the ears on the top of the spoon.

Glue the googly eyes to the upper part of the spoon.

Glue two teeth to the bottom of the spoon base just above the handle.
